Roles & Functions

  1. Maintaining Tonnage Data : Regularly collects, maintains, and publishes data on India’s registered fleet, providing insights essential for policy and industry decision-making.
  2. Policy Development for Indian-Flag Promotion : Formulates policies such as the Right of First Refusal (RoFR) and subsidy schemes to boost the competitiveness of Indian-flagged vessels in global and domestic trade.
  3. Enhancing Employment for Indian Seafarers : Supports job creation by mandating Indian crew inclusion in certain contracts and promoting cadet training, thus building a skilled workforce.
  4. Chartering Permissions for Foreign Vessels : Issues licenses for foreign-flagged vessels under Sections 406 and 407 of the Merchant Shipping Act, ensuring compliance and prioritizing Indian vessels.
  5. Modernizing India’s Fleet : Promotes fleet quality and safety through age norms and modernization initiatives, aiming to build a safe, efficient, and sustainable Indian maritime sector.
